Z anchors are one of the types of anchors used on welded hollow metal frames when they are going into a stud wall before the drywall is up. You have to install the frames while the wall studs are still exposed. The anchors are shaped like a Z, welded into the frame throat, and you screw in from the back of the stud into the clip.
Here is a better example of where the screws go. This is called a steel stud anchor. You may hear it called a steel channel anchor. It serves the same purpose as the z-clip except these anchors are shipped loose and installed on the job site versus welded in like Z-Clips. These just twist in & snap in.
